SEO, AEO and GEO in Sri Lanka: a practical guide
Start with pages that explain your business clearly. SEO helps people discover those pages in search; AEO makes answers easy to understand; GEO considers how your information may be used in generative AI responses.
Do you need a separate strategy for each?
These terms describe overlapping work. Google says its AI search features do not require special optimisation beyond established SEO practices. A crawlable website, helpful content and trustworthy business information remain the starting point. No agency can guarantee a ranking or an AI citation.
Match each page to a real Sri Lankan customer need
A search such as “SEO services Sri Lanka” calls for a service page explaining scope, process and how to request a proposal. “What is AEO?” calls for a concise explanation. Keep these intentions distinct, then link the explanation to the relevant service.
For a local service business, describe actual service areas, how appointments work and how customers can contact you. For an online retailer, explain delivery coverage, charges, payment options and returns using the business’s current policies.
Make local business information consistent
Use the same business name, address and contact details on your website and verified Google Business Profile. Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and prominence. Accurate categories, genuine customer reviews and useful service information support local discovery; a website edit cannot change your distance from a searcher.
Answer the questions buyers ask before contacting you
- Who is this service for, and what problem does it solve?
- What is included, and what needs a separate scope?
- What affects the price and delivery schedule?
- Which locations and languages can the business support?
- What evidence, examples or project details can a customer verify?
Put a direct answer near each question, then add useful detail. Publish real project examples with permission. Avoid invented results, copied city pages and claims that cannot be checked.
Plan English, Sinhala and Tamil around your audience
Research the language customers use when looking for your services. Translate complete, useful pages when there is a business need, with native-language review and separate URLs. Add language annotations only when those versions exist. Repeating the same keywords in three languages is not a substitute for a helpful page.
Check the technical foundations
Important pages should return successful responses, allow crawling, contain readable text and link to the canonical URL. Keep the sitemap current and structured data consistent with visible content. Test the mobile enquiry journey and page performance. Special AI files or markup are not prerequisites for Google’s AI search features.
Measure enquiries alongside visibility
Use Search Console to review relevant queries and landing pages. Connect form submissions and sales to analytics where consent and tracking allow. Monitor identifiable AI referrals separately, while recognising that not every AI-assisted discovery produces a measurable referral. Compare qualified leads and conversions over time rather than promising a fixed ranking deadline.
